| Q: Is
there a way to see the NetWare GUI interface
when accessing the server remotely?
A: Yes. However, most
remote methods do not support the GUI.
There are three ways that I know of,
but I've only used two of them.
1)
You
can redirect
the GUI to an X-Windows emulator
on your workstation. I have never
done this and have heard
that it's painful.
2) If you
have a remote access board, such as a
Compaq
RILO card, you can access the GUI
through that. The RILO card is an expansion
card that plugs into a PCI slot in the
server, has a separate IP address, and
functions independently of the server.
It can be used to power on/off the server,
upload bios patches, manage remote sessions,
etc.
3) NetWare
6.5 now supports the GUI interface through
Remote Manager, Novell's web based server
management utility. For previous versions
you are out of
luck and will have to walk to
the console.

Q:
I want to upgrade my NetWare
5.1 server to NetWare 6. However, I
want to do a clean install and I need
to be able to keep all the user accounts,
printer settings, and file permissions.
Is this possible?
A: Yes. However,
it requires a 2nd server to be used.
You will have to install NetWare 6 on
the new server, and then use the NetWare
migration utility to migrate the files
and permissions. Then you can migrate
the printers and other services to the
new server and then decommission the
old server. Better yet, once you have
everything on the new NetWare 6 server,
you could then upgrade the NetWare 5.1
server and have a 2nd NetWare 6 server
in the tree. This will help provide redundancy
of NDS. Furthermore, you could put some
of the services on one server and some
on the other. This will spread the workload
over two servers instead of having to
run everything on the one server.
