Installing Novell Client 4.9 with the IPX Protocol enabled

Problem: Can't find Tree or Server after installing Novell NetWare Client v4.9 for Windows XP/2000 or the Novell Client v3.4 for Windows 98.

ISSUE: When Novell first released the Novell Client v4.9, they made a major change in the way the networking protocols are installed. By default, only TCP/IP is installed with the client. Furthermore, if IPX was configured, the client installation process removes it. For users that rely on IPX for the network protocol, this is a major problem. For example, if a NetWare 4.11 server is in use, clients will no longer be able to access the server because it requires IPX to process NCP requests. This problem could potentially be seen with NetWare 5.x and 6.x servers if SLP is not configured.

SOLUTION: This is a simple solution which reinstalls the client and specifies IPX and IP as the protocol (As opposed to IP only). Note that the illustrated step by step instructions below are screen shots of the NT/XP version of the client installation. The process is similar, but not identical on Windows 95/98.

Run the Setup file, and choose "Custom Installation."

Select the appropriate options from the list of services.

Note: If you use Novell Distributed Print Services to automate the deployment of printers to your workstations, you'll need to check the "Novell Distributed Print Services Box." However, this setting does not effect the ability to connect to an IPX network.

Note: Older clients have additional options on this dialog that correspond to ZENworks 3.x capabilities.

The defaults shown here should be fine. However, there are some cases where NMAS may cause connectivity problems (separate from any IPX issue), particularly on older servers. As a rule, leave it enabled unless you have problems. NMAS can be disabled in the client settings and does not require a reinstall to make changes.

This is the critical decision to enable IPX. Choose "IP and IPX" so both protocols can be used with the Novell Client.

Note that the default settings forced IPX to be removed.

Note! Do not choose IP with IPX Compatibility unless you know of a specific reason to do so. Most likely, you don't.

Choose either NDS or Bindery depending on your server version(s).

NDS is most likely the setting you need to use. If your server is NetWare 4.x or higher, use this option.

Bindery is only used if your server is NetWare 3.x or lower.

Select "Finish" to begin the file copy and configuration of the options you selected in previous screen.

Wait while the files are copied and the client components are installed and configured.

After the installation is complete, reboot the workstation.

When the login prompt comes up, you should be able to locate your IPX based server/tree and login to the network.
