Advantages
OF GroupWise Messenger From a corporate perspective, GroupWise Messenger
has several advantages over the "free" instant messengers:
GroupWise Messenger can use SSL encryption to ensure
that messages can't be hijacked. The Messenger client has an
indicator to show when sessions are encrypted.
In general, with GroupWise Messenger, your messages
are not transmitted over the Internet. Because the agents run
on a server within your network, there is no need for your messages
to go out past your firewall and on the Internet. NOTE: This
is
significant because Yahoo, AIM, and others all send data in clear
text over the internet to their central messaging servers. This
occurs even for users within the same network. With GroupWise
Messenger, ALL messages stay within your network.
If you do have users that attach over a public link
such as the Internet, the messages are secure because of the
SSL encryption.
Only authorized users in your network
can login and use the Messenger, so all unnecessary and personal
Instant Messaging to friends, relatives, and chat buddies is
eliminated.
Several potentially illegal or unauthorized activities
are eliminated because users can not
communicate
to
non-authorized users through the messenger. For example, employees
can not use the Messenger to leak corporate secrets (whether intentionally
or not)
to outsiders.
All conversations can be logged (via the Archive
Agent) for later retrieval. The logs are stored centrally on
the server, not on the users workstations. In situations where
companies are legally required to maintain records for all corporate
communications, this is a very important feature.
It's licensed as part of GroupWise, so if you have
purchased GroupWise 6.5, you do not have to purchase separate
licenses for the Messenger Service.
GroupWise Messenger does not require much overhead
to run. The agents can run on your existing servers, and will
run on either NetWare or Windows 2000.
