Customize GroupWise WebAccess with Company Logo
Put your Company Logo in the GroupWise Login Dialog

NOTE: This content applies to GroupWise 7 SP1, SP2, SP3. The intial 7.0 release was different, but no longer relevant.

Many companies prefer to put their own company logo into the applications they use, particularly web based applications. This helps them reflect their own company identity and employees feel more comfortable with the process. It's easy to customize GroupWise WebAccess to display your company logo. Follow these easy steps.

Default "Collapsed" Dialog

Default GroupWise 7 WebAccess Login Screen. While this is a stylish new look for GroupWise, you may want to customize this with your own logo.

Custom "Collapsed" Dialog

By following a few simple steps, you can customize the GroupWise 7 WebAccess login page to reflect your company logo and identity.

Default "Expanded" Dialog

The expanded dialog provides more options for the users to choose from, but uses the same images.

Custom "Expanded" Dialog

Same customized logo but with more options for users to choose.

NOTE: We are ONLY modifying images with this tutorial. We are not modifying any of Novell's code.

At first you may think that the login page is one large image. But on closer analysis, you're realize that it is actually two different images as well as dialog boxes and other hyperlinks. Because of this, we need to find the specific graphics used to make the screen. Furthermore, you will notice that the background image is not actually completely white, but actually is an embossed/watermarked globe that is barely visible. I prefer to use a plain white background because it looks cleaner.

STEP 1: Locate Image Files

Locate the following files on your server: 'splash-02.gif' and 'splash.png'. Default typical path names to these files are below, however they may vary depending on your implementation and configuration. You may need to search for these files elsewhere if you have customized your installation.

NetWare
sys:/tomcat/4/webapps/gw/com/novell/webaccess/images/

Windows
c:/novell/tomcat5.5/webapps/gw/com/novell/webaccess/images/

LINUX (SLES 9)
/var/opt/novell/tomcat4/webapps/gw/com/novell/webaccess/images/

OES2 Linux (SLES 10 SP1)
/var/opt/novell/gw/com/novell/webaccess/images

STEP 2: Understand and Modify Image Files

The 'splash-02.gif' file has the dimensions of 362x77 pixels. The 'splash.png' file has the dimensions of 508x347 pixels. It's important to NOT modify the dimensions, only the actual contents.

splash-02.gif: This file is where you want to put your company logo. Using any graphics program that supports .PNG format (Such as Photoshop), insert your own logo into this image. Manipulate the other graphics within the image to get the look you want. Save it in the same digital format as the origanal, and do not modify the size or color settings.

splash.png: This file is more or less a background image. If you look at the original file, you'll notice that it's mostly white but has a fourth of a globe in the bottom right corner. It's faint, almost like a watermark. For my own WebAccess server, I removed this image altogether and made the background solid White. You may want to play with this to see what suits you best. Save it in the same digital format as the origanal, and do not modify the size or color settings.

STEP 3: Replace Files on Server and Test with Browser

After you have modified the images, put the new versions on the server and overwrite the existing files. Here are a couple additional tips and tricks you should know.

  1. Make sure to test on Firefox and Internet Explorer. They will look slightly different in each one.
  2. When saving the images make sure to keep the original size and color attributes.
  3. Keep a copy of the files in a safe place. Next time you patch your servers, the files will be overwritten and back to the default look.
