During our years of experience, we've found that there are some differences in Administrators types and personalities. To help contribute to the greater good of IT Professionals everywhere, we've derived a test to determine if you are more suited to be a GroupWise Administrator or an Exchange Administrator.
Answer the following questions. Give yourself 1 point for "A" and 2 points for "B" answers. Add them up at the end.
1) Regarding email viruses and security, which would you prefer:
- Being compromised by email viruses and worms every 6 months and having all of your servers being taken out of commission during the cleanup.
- What's an Email Virus? I've heard of them, but I haven't actually witnessed one.
2) Which would you rather have:
- An email system that forces you to also use their proprietary operating system?
- An email system that is cross platform and does not promote vendor lock-ins.
3) How many times does your email system go down every year?
- At least 4-5 times or more.
- What’s downtime? Do scheduled maintenance and upgrades count as downtime?
4) If you were upgrading your current email system, which would you prefer?
- Rip the entire network apart, install new systems, and redesign the entire infrastructure. All to support the email system upgrade.
- Upgrade in place; keep network structure in tact. Minimal impact to end users.
5) Regarding ego and pride, what drives you?
- Being able to brag about the size of your IT budget to coworkers and colleagues.
- Being able to brag about system uptime and how much money you are saving your company.
6) Do you have a Linux strategy?
- No, we prefer to be driven by the decisions of a single vendor.
- Yes, we have a strategy and prefer solutions that give us platform flexibility.
7) Do you like Marketing Hype?
- Yes. If it’s printed, it’s probably true, and when my kozmo.com stock goes though the roof, I'll prove it.
- No. I let the solution speak for itself.
8) Regarding server reboots, which do you prefer?
- I prefer to reboot my servers weekly. This ensures that things run smoothly and we have less downtime. Weekly reboots are a good thing.
- It shouldn’t be necessary to reboot a server.
9) If your systems go down for whatever reason, would you rather:
- Reinstall the system, which usually fixes it. Troubleshooting is overrated.
- Be able to pinpoint the problem and fix it without reinstalling.
10) Which statement best represents your idea of Sunday afternoon:
- Sunday afternoons are our patch management day.
- Sunday afternoons are for football.
